Phosphorus tribromide (PBr3) is commonly used in Hell-Volhard-Zelinsky halogenation to α-brominate carboxylic acids to form the corresponding acyl bromides. It can also be used to convert primary and secondary alcohols to alkyl bromides.
Phosphorus tribromide can be used as a reagent for the following reactions:
- Synthesis of 7-ethoxy -1-(Right.-Ethylphenoxy)-3,7-dimethyl-2-octene (a similartrans,trans,cis-10,11-epoxy -7-ethyl -3, 11-dimethyltridece-2, 6-dienoate synthesis of juvenile hormone) a new experimental protocol.
- Synthesis of 1,2, 3-diazaphosphine, 1,2, 3-thiazaphosphine and 1,2-azaphosphorene with a colored ketone ring.
- Synthesis of 1-bromoundec-1-ene from 10-undecen-1-ol.
